01Why Phuket works for first-timers
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the easiest to reach, with direct international flights and a road bridge to the mainland. It has the widest range of hotels at every budget.
It is also the best launchpad for the Andaman islands — Phi Phi, James Bond Island and the Similans are all day trips from here.
02Choosing a beach
Patong is the busiest and the centre of the nightlife. Kata and Karon are a short drive south and much more family-friendly.
For a quieter stay, look at Nai Harn in the south or Bang Tao and Layan in the north.
03Getting around
Taxis and tuk-tuks in Phuket are expensive compared with the rest of Thailand and often refuse to use a meter. Agree a price before you get in, or use a ride-hailing app.
Renting a scooter is cheap but Phuket's roads are genuinely dangerous — only ride if you are already experienced, and always wear a helmet.
